Aare Gorge
The Aare Gorge - a breathtaking natural wonder in the Bernese OberlandÂ
The Aare Gorge is a spectacular, approximately 1.4 km long gorge near Meiringen, formed over thousands of years by the meltwater of the Aare glacier. At its narrowest point, it is only about 1 meter wide, while the steep limestone cliffs rise up to 200 meters high.
Well developed: A secure circular route leads over wooden walkways and through tunnels - it can be completed in around 45 minutes and is also suitable for families, wheelchair users and baby carriages in some places. If you visit on a Friday or Saturday in midsummer, you can look forward to atmospheric lighting at the front of the gorge.
Highlight for children: the gorge has its own mascot - the "Tatzelwurm". Children can discover his family along the so-called Tatzi Trail - an imaginative mix of play and discovery.
